Our approach
ZEHO’s conservation project started with a simple goal: protect the forest before more of it is lost. We are working to safeguard a remaining forest area in Mtende by clearly marking and protecting its boundaries and involving the local community in its protection. Awareness currently happens mainly through conversations within the community, while educational signs, broader awareness activities, monitoring and restoration are planned as the project develops
The Problem:
Zanzibar’s forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. In and around Mtende, we have witnessed trees being cut or burned for construction materials, charcoal production, new roads, farming and expanding development. As the forest disappears, so do important habitats for bees and other wildlife.
Beekeeping is part of this bigger picture.
Bees depend on healthy, diverse habitats, while their pollination helps ecosystems thrive. By protecting the forest and supporting sustainable beekeeping, we want to preserve biodiversity while creating a tangible local value connected to keeping nature alive.
